Position Summary:

Reporting and accountable to the CEO/Administrator

Experience and Training
The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner provides primary medical care in designated settings under the supervision of a licensed physician. Working through physician approved protocols; the
Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner evaluates and treats patients. ensures quality assurance
standards are met by following all guidelines of physician(s), Ward Memorial Hospital and Sandhills Family Clinic.

Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE PATIENT CARE TO INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES AND THE
COMMUNITY.
• Utilizes training and expert knowledge to identify areas of need based on protocols to assess, treat and refer as necessary.
• Demonstrates competency of skills based on knowledge of PA/NP role and all care provide.
• Teaches patients health education/preventative medicine.
• Counsels patients on medical problems, expected effects of treatment, dietary measures and other therapeutic health maintenance measures.

COLLABORATES WITH PHYSICIAN SUPERVISORS THROUGH APPROVED PROTOCOLS TO PROVIDE DELIVERY OF QUALITY HEALTH CARE SERVICES.
• Evaluates all appointed patients as outlined in physician-approved protocols.
• Obtains a complete history on chief complaints and other problems on patient presentation.
• Performs pertinent exams directed to patient's history and complaints. Specialty exams done if indicated.
• Requests or performs laboratory tests, requests x-ray procedures and requests other diagnostic tests or procedures per protocols.
• lnitiates drug therapy per protocols
• Refers all urgent or complex patient care to the physician.
• Collects specimens for pathologic examination.
In emergencies, administers lifesaving procedures and medications pending the availability of a physician, but not to exceed BLS/ACLS/PALS current training.

Physical and Mental Requirements
• Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
• Follows safety policies and guidelines for the hospital and clinic.
• Participates in the organization's QA/PI programs and processes.
• Assists with and performs, as requested, other administrative duties by the Administrator/CEO.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Program. Bachelor's Degree in healthcare field is desirable.
Two years' experience in primary care/family practice preferred.

LICENSURE/ CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Current CPR, ACLS and PALS certifications required. ATLS preferred.

PERSONAL JOB-RELATED SKILLS
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Skilled in counseling, leadership and management abilities.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Duties of the position require extended periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.

History:

Ward Memorial Hospital is a 25-bed critical access facility providing healthcare services to Ward County and 14 surrounding counties in the area. The hospital has served residents of Ward County since 1956.

The hospital features a Level IV trauma designated emergency room, in addition to a wide range of medical services including laboratory, radiology, general surgery, sleep wellness center, respiratory therapy and cardiac/pulmonary rehab, rheumatology, physical therapy, and two rural health clinics.
