Chief Nursing Officer - Nursing Administration

SUMMARY:

Within the framework of the objectives and policies established by the CEO/Administrator, plans and coordinates nursing services with those of the medical and administrative systems. Participates as a member of the hospital's management team in planning, policy formulation, and administrative decision making with particular reference to the role, functions, and operations of the hospital's nursing services. In summary, is responsible for patient care, management, resource management, and fiscal management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for managing, directing, and supervising the following services: Nursing, ER, Med/Surg, Swing Bed, Infection Control and Risk Management.
Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice within the institution.
Assesses the quality of care rendered.
Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other services under his or her position control.
Responsible for verifying employee credentials under his or her position control.
Responsible for staff performance, staff recruitment, staff retention, and staff development.
Responsible for collaborating with other department and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development.
Responsible for planning, developing, and implementing a budgeted process for staffing and services rendered.
Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the hospital.
Serves as spokesperson for nursing matters and represents the hospital with professional nursing and related organizations.
Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.
Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITES:
Participates in other assigned duties as designated by the CEO/Administrator.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Possesses skills and knowledge in the following areas:
Principles of organization
Theories of management
Strategies of nursing management
Financial management
Foundations of health laws
Statistics and research methodology

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required.
Minimum of five years progressively responsible nursing experience in a hospital acute care setting required. Management experience preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess RN licensure in good standing in the state of Texas. Master’s Degree, or active progression toward a Master’s Degree is not required, but preferred.

Regardless of degree (AD, Diploma, Bachelors, Masters) a minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience is required and three years of experience in nursing management preferred. Current BLS and ACLS required.
PALS and TNCC preferred. Certification in a specified field preferred (CNE, CRRN, CCRN, PCCN).

History:

Ward Memorial Hospital is a 25-bed critical access facility providing healthcare services to Ward County and 14 surrounding counties in the area. The hospital has served residents of Ward County since 1956.

The hospital features a Level IV trauma designated emergency room, in addition to a wide range of medical services including laboratory, radiology, general surgery, sleep wellness center, respiratory therapy and cardiac/pulmonary rehab, rheumatology, physical therapy, and two rural health clinics.
